Readers at TBO.com responded strongly to news that the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans put up a 30-by-60-foot Confederate flag at the Interstate 75 bridge over U.S. 92. The flag was raised Oct. 12 and is even larger than the one raised there last summer, sparking widespread controversy and national attention. The flag is the centerpiece of a 1.9-acre memorial park. Free-agent defenseman Marek Malik skated with the Lightning on Thursday morning as the team assesses where the 6-foot-6, 240-pound Czech Republic native stands with his conditioning. Tampa Bay vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton said it could be anywhere from three-to-five days, depending on how Malik performs on his physical, before the defenseman is signed. This concerns The Tampa Tribune Aug. 2 story, "County Mayor Not Likely To Make Ballot." I have helped lead numerous petition efforts throughout Florida, one of which was ended by a very similar court ruling. It is encouraging to see the court rule in the county mayor case in a manner that is consistent with how it ruled in our 1995 city of Tampa referendum case. ...more
