What were once lofty promises to curtail the excess of a soulless group of health insurance companies has turned into what is almost certainly going to be a bonanza for those very same companies. It has become obvious to all that the "free market" is not free for people who need health care. Attention seniors: For the first time in history there will not be an increase in the Social Security cost of living adjustment (COLA). There may not be any for the next three years. That does not mean your Social Security benefit will stay the same, it will decrease! Your Medicare premium will increase from $96.40 to $104.20 in 2010 and to $120.20 in 2011. I sat down to pay my monthly bills and separated out 14 statements from Medicare, Florida Blue Cross and Tricare. Fourteen! The postage cost to the companies was $4.86. Each individual trip to a doctor was accorded a separate statement as was each drug cost. ...more
