Pasco County deputies and detectives, aided by a drug-sniffing dog, found 85 pounds of marijuana in a car that was stopped because of an improperly attached license plate, the sheriff's office reported today. The driver, Jose-Juan Carlos Castro-Ramirez, 29, of Lacoochee, was arrested on a charge of trafficking marijuana. He is being held in the Land O' Lakes Jail with bail set at $50,000. Castro-Ramirez was driving a 1997 Saturn near Old Lakeland Highway and Stewart Road south of Dade City when he was pulled over at 6:12 p.m. Wednesday by the sheriff's office's Street Tactical Operations and Patrol, a report said. ...more

AVON PARK –– Julie Lamb's grin could be heard through the phone after she was told that she'd been named the 2008 Highlands Today Softball Player of the Year. "This is a total shock to me," Lamb said. "This is coming out of left field." Actually it's catcher –– a position Lamb has been a leader at for the Red Devils for the last three seasons, and one she fell into by accident. "When I was eight and playing Dixie softball, none of the other girls wanted to play catcher," Lamb said. "I volunteered and have been behind the plate ever since." Her expertise at one of the hardest positions in softball comes from a solid work ethic and an underlying desire to get better with each game. Avon Park head coach Mike Cobb gives all the credit to the Red Devil senior, who took on the role of offensive and clubhouse leader after Heather Barnes was sidelined with an injury. ...more

ARCADIA — In Julie Lamb's first at-bat of the season, she was hit by a pitch. Her next time at the plate, she was the one doing the hitting. Lamb smacked a grand-slam in the first inning on Tuesday and the Avon Park softball team got a solid outing in the circle from Ashton Shirey as the Red Devils opened up their season with a 17-0 thumping of Hardee in the DeSoto softball tournament. ...more

WAUCHULA — The Avon Park girls soccer team tallied its second win of the season against the Hardee Wildcats in a Class 4A-District 10 match-up at Wildcat Stadium on Thursday, winning 3-0. Missy Lander, who has been a vocal leader on the field for Avon Park, was one of three that scored for the Red Devils, who have earned both victories this season against the 'Cats. "We are passing the ball so much better now," said AP head coach Greg Thacker. "I finally have a squad that will stick with the program, and are working hard."
