What Hillsborough County Jail Deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones did last January was an outrage. While searching a partially paralyzed man during booking, she dumped Brian Sterner out of his wheelchair, as casually as if he was a bag of dirty laundry. The Sheriff's Office quickly and rightly charged her with abusing the disabled, a third-degree felony that could bring up to a five-year sentence. ...more

SEBRING — Highlands County's public access ramp to popular Lake Denton will be reopened at 8 a.m. Saturday. Public access to this exceptionally clear lake off Memorial Drive has been closed since Sept. 13, when the county commissioners' voted 3-2 to close it due to lakefront homeowners' complaints about traffic and parking congestion and rowdy and offensive behavior. ...more

SEBRING — Scuba divers want public access to Lake Denton restored by the beginning of next summer. That's not soon enough, though, for the special seven-member Lake Denton Citizens Committee. At its third meeting Thursday night, the committee set the goal of reopening public access at this popular, exceptionally clear lake in six months, with a target date of April 18. No recommendations on how to do that have been settled on yet. Committee members, though, agreed that parking and/or user's fees will probably be necessary to pay for off-duty law enforcement officers working a private security detail. ...more
