I guess my admittedly flippant response to the first letter Dallas Dunlop wrote pushed a few of his hot buttons and for that, I suppose, I owe him an apology. It was all meant in good fun and certainly not intended to be insulting. Having said that, I still think he totally missed my point. I never for a moment claimed that we are not in the midst of a national energy crisis; nor did I wish to create the impression that we have nothing to worry about or that we are sitting on gazillions of barrels of oil. ...more

When gas pushed past $3 a gallon, we all raised our eyebrows, sweated a little bit but went about our business. When it crossed $3.50 a gallon, we cursed the oil companies, blamed the Iraq War and waited for prices to drop. Now, at $4 a gallon and above, conserving gas has become serious business for most Americans. Adjusting to high gas prices is no longer an inconvenience; it's a reality that motorists now realize may never change, only get worse. Americans, it appears, are no longer waiting for gas prices to drop. This is well exemplified in some research studies, the Associated Press reports. ...more

With today's gas prices rising like they are, I would like to know why we are having ethanol shoved down our throats like the gas companies are doing. I for one have found that if I burn ethanol in my car, which is a Toyota Avalon 2008, my gas mileage will drop by four to five miles per gallon. In the end I will use more gas. I believe that there are more readers in the same boat as me. It takes so much ground water, that we do not have here in Florida to produce ethanol. ...more

I read a lot of letters of complaints about the cost of everything, but see no solutions. First, I would like to comment on "Our Opinion" printed May 25. There is one paragraph that needs to change one letter. "Someone who knows a little politics and how Washington works is U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson." I would like to drop the a. Here are my answers-questions: Why are we not drilling in the Gulf and other locations? Why are we not building coal to oil plants? Why are not converting slate to oil? Why do we still have a 53 cents a gallon on imported ethanol? ...more
