According to an article published earlier this week in The New York Times, something people would have thought impossible a few years ago, when the price of gasoline as well above $4 a gallon, has been happening of late. U.S. oil refineries have been closing. There hasn't been a refinery built in this country since 1979, but a prolonged drop in the demand for gasoline by U.S. motorists over the last few years has produced excess refining capacity that is being idled. The lengthy recession is credited with much of the slump in demand, but more fuel-efficient vehicles could be playing a role as well. ...more

Drill Now Fox News recently had a guest on from an oil drilling company who gave his estimate of the amounts and locations of oil readily available in the U.S. Not only could we start getting oil from these sources within a short period of time, (he said less than a year from nearby shore lines; three to six years from those farther away) but it would start freeing us from our dependence on foreign oil. ...more

I read a lot of letters of complaints about the cost of everything, but see no solutions. First, I would like to comment on "Our Opinion" printed May 25. There is one paragraph that needs to change one letter. "Someone who knows a little politics and how Washington works is U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson." I would like to drop the a. Here are my answers-questions: Why are we not drilling in the Gulf and other locations? Why are we not building coal to oil plants? Why are not converting slate to oil? Why do we still have a 53 cents a gallon on imported ethanol? ...more
