While much of the attention has been focused on Washington, D.C., the site of the Great Health Care Debate, there apparently has been a bit of hanky-panky going on in Tallahassee. We refer to Wafflegate. This miniscandal takes its name from e-mail messages state transportation officials were sending back and forth during the run-up to the Legislature's recent approval of a funding measure for a proposed Central Florida commuter rail project. The officials allegedly were using terms like "pancakes" and "waffles" in the subject line of the e-mails in an effort to disguise the real subject matter of the messages from nosy pests such as the news media and public interest groups. ...more

Recently I heard a discussion on a local radio station about the deficiencies of our library system. This made me think of an announcement on the same station reporting possible library closings in Volusia and Palm Beach counties. Could this happen in Highlands? You betcha! Considering the income climate, we could find ourselves driving miles for current best sellers, DVDs, videos and computer usage time. Our Lake Placid library is staffed with dedicated, friendly and knowledgeable employees. Their willingness to help surpasses any library I've visited.
