Inmates are being kept in stitches through a sewing program the Pasco Sheriff's Office has started. For years there was an annual late-summer rite that occurred all around Florida. The local sheriff, in good economic times or bad, would suggest in a public fashion the bad guys were winning the upper hand and the sheriff's agency needed more money to put extra personnel and equipment on the street to take back the initiative. A multiagency investigation into the Valentine Bloods gang has yielded arrests, and the agencies will hold a joint news conference this afternoon in Pasco County. The event will allow the agencies to announce who has been arrested. The agencies also will ask for the public's help locating gang members who are fugitives. ...more

Deputies have one more weapon against DUI offenders: A newish mobile DUI enforcement unit. The trailer isn't exactly new - nearly two decades old - but the onetime Crime Prevention Unit has been repurposed as the DUI Enforcement Mobile Unit. The $30,000 transformation was funded in part by a $16,000 grant from Pasco's Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention, known as ASAP. The remaining $14,000 used to spruce up and outfit the once moldy trailer came from the Pasco Sheriff's Office's federal forfeiture funds. "Thanks to the drug dealers of Pasco County we were able to furbish this and finish out the grant," Pasco Sheriff Bob White said today, smiling outside his administration building.
