Kudos to Darryl Scott for the amazing changes under way at Animal Control. Keep up the great work. It's wonderful to see county personnel working hard to make it a first-class facility as well as putting funds to their intended use. What baffles me is, how did his predecessor stay in the position for so long while the facility remained dilapidated and the cat's area was in such horrendous shape as described in the Jan. 20 Highlands Today article? ...more

Dear Abby: A friend was diagnosed with cancer. A single woman living alone, she rallied a group of co-workers, friends and neighbors to donate their time to help her with a variety of tasks. These included driving her back and forth to chemo and doctor appointments, fixing meals, cleaning her house (she has OCD and was superpicky about every detail, including cleaning the cat box), sleeping over to make sure she was OK (we had only a lumpy couch because she refused to set up a bed in one of her two vacant bedrooms!) and handling a variety of other tasks. ...more

I've gone back to an old-fashioned approach to make sure I get things done. Several months ago, I purchased a large, white erasable board with a stand and set it up in my office. At the beginning of each week, I list all the things I need to do for my job and my personal life. Like many people, I have an electronic organizer, but I needed something larger. I wanted something I couldn't ignore, misplace or lose under piles of folders and papers. The white board was just the thing.
