I remember when the post office in my small home town was the focal point of the community. It was a place where you met your fellow friends and neighbors. You would stand around to discuss what was happening and share stories about your families and what the town council had done or was going to do. ...more

I am so saddened by an article I read today on the front page of the Lake Placid Journal. It tells of a recent "Candy Day" fundraiser held by the Lake Placid Lions Club. Seventy- year-old Lion Miles Lambert, who was born and raised in Lake Placid, and who at the young age of 18 years old first became one of the Lake Placid Lions Club's first members, was arrested, being charged with a misdemeanor for attempting to raise money for the blind and deaf by standing on the sidewalk of the Lake Placid Post Office. After 52 years of giving so much of his time and efforts in the attempt to raise money for those people in our county who so desperately need help with vision and hearing problems, it is unbelievable that our sweet little town has now been infiltrated by someone in such need of standing up to "The Rules" in lieu of someone else's pain. I have experienced similar unreasonable behavior for putting business cards in the sacred mail box. ...more

I have started to get used to the inane idiocy that our illustrious lawmakers in Washington have been spewing, but the new law I encountered today really takes the cake. Having been the victim of identity theft several years ago, I was advised by my bank and my lawyer to not sign credit cards but, instead, to print "Ask for ID" on the signature line. This made perfect sense to me as an excellent theft deterrent, so I have done it for years. ...more

One day, Mother received a letter in the mail. She told us she had sent for a Newfoundland/Labrador retriever pup for the family and that this was the letter of confirmation. The puppies had been born, and when they were weaned and eating dog food, were big and strong enough to stand the trip, they would send a male pup to us. ...more
