Jim Schwartz insisted he loves challenges. Well, he's got one. The Detroit Lions, the NFL's first 0-16 team, agreed Thursday on a four-year deal with Schwartz to make him their next coach. The former Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator will be introduced at a Friday news conference at Ford Field, where Detroit lost its home games last year by an average of 21.4 points to break another dubious league record. The 42-year-old Schwartz just finished his eighth season as the Titans' defensive coordinator and his 10th on their staff. He interviewed for a second time with the Lions on Monday. ...more

Almost two years ago, local charities and church groups that help the needy survive, along with the city, formed the Tarpon Alliance For Humanity to coordinate resources. Formation of the group, a few years before the economy faltered, now seems prophetic. The united effort is needed now more than ever. ...more

TAMPA In an unexpected move, a divided city council Thursday night voted down a proposed franchise agreement with Tampa Electric, forcing Mayor Pam Iorio's administration back to the negotiating table with the private regional energy company. The vote was 4 to 2 on a motion by Councilwoman Linda Saul-Sena to reject the voluminous 25-year agreement. Council President Tom Scott and Councilman Charlie Miranda cast the dissenting votes. ...more
