Last Friday, the Pasco County Commission began reviewing the county's proposed budget for fiscal 2010. With the collapse of the Florida real estate-housing sector, on top of the nationwide economic slowdown, the county's projected revenue could fall about $37 million short of the planned spending in the $900 million-plus budget. Commissioners have received a list of proposed spending cuts meant to close the budget gap. Even the people who run it will admit the Pasco County Public Transportation bus system for years had more good intentions than riders. When the PCPT system first began rolling, Pasco officials felt the buses were something the county should have, even if there were only a relative handful of people willing to climb aboard. It now has riders but could have more if it were easier to use. ...more

NEW PORT RICHEY Michael Cavoto had just stepped off the county bus when cars started crashing around him Wednesday He didn't see them coming. "All I felt was a little bit of a jerk and this car rolled up and hit that pole," Cavoto said, directing his gaze toward a telephone pole behind a bus stop on U.S. 19 near Limit Drive.
