We all know current economic times are stressful; there is a significant lack of funds coming into our state and local government. Our schools are suffering losses in income. I have read reports that Highlands County will need to operate with at least 30 less teachers next year. My basic question is, can we continue to offer quality education to our students with 30 fewer teachers? ...more

I have lived in Highlands County for more than 37 years and have watched with enthusiasm and excitement as many friends, co-workers and now our children, have the opportunity to seek quality education in our community. South Florida Community College has advanced in many more ways than we ever dreamed and the presence of both the past president Dr. Cornelius and the current president Dr. Stephens has brought a great quality of learning and opportunity. It was with great disappointment that I read a letter to the editor from Mr. Jerry Dejonge spewing disparaging remarks about our sheriff. It's getting ugly out on the presidential campaign trail. Attack ads are heating up, so are tempers. And, as usual, few of the attacks are truthful and fudging the facts is raised to an art form. No one knows this better than Republican candidate Mike Huckabee. Huckabee, who has been surging in the polls for weeks, is taking a pounding in Iowa at the hands of some of the folks who bankrolled the Swift Boat fiasco. A Houston, Texas, home builder, who funded much of the unsubstantiated rumors surrounding the Sen. John Kerry presidential bid, has turned on a Republican. He claims Huckabee was a big spender as governor of Arkansas. It's true Huckabee spent taxpayer money in Arkansas. He admits this, and has a good reason why he did it. His state was one of the worst in the nation on education, and the state's poor school system was infamous around the nation. ...more
