Alonso High senior baseball player Tyler Ding has verbally committed to the University of Tampa, Ravens coach Landy Faedo said Tuesday. Ding, Alonso's starting second baseman, had a huge junior season, hitting .476 with eight doubles, two home runs, 26 RBIs, 31 runs scored and 23 stolen bases for the Class 6A state champion Ravens. He earned Class 6A first-team all-state honors and was a Tribune All-Hillsborough County first-team pick. ...more

Three active NFL players are joining former players in agreeing to donate their brains after death to a Boston University medical school program that studies sports brain injuries. The donations by Matt Birk of the Baltimore Ravens, Lofa Tatupu of the Seattle Seahawks and Sean Morey of the Arizona Cardinals were announced Monday. As expected, Jesuit's baseball team fell from the top spot in the ESPN RISE national poll after suffering its first loss to Sarasota last week, falling five spots to No. 6. However, the Tigers are not the only Hillsborough County program in the national Top 25 this week. The Alonso Ravens made a big jump from No. 31 to No. 20 in this week's poll, giving the county two national top 25 teams. Alonso secured a spot in the 2009 state playoffs after knocking off Countryside in a Class 6A-District 7 semifinal on Tuesday. ...more
