Responding to U.S. Rep. Brown-Waite's recent article in the Dec. 20 edition, it appears she is continuing her onslaught to be re-elected again to a fourth term in the U.S. Congress. She is also mailing correspondence to numerous constituents throughout her assigned district calling attention to her bid for re-election. Upon reading her article, I had to read it several times which in my opinion amounted to political psycho-babble concerning her alleged accomplishments. ...more

Regarding your recent article, "Nobody's Problem," like Mr. Turberville's, our neighborhood -- just a few blocks away -- is at the start of the same kind of vacant home mess. Great neighbors were more or less forced out of their meticulously-tended home due to the financial debacle of a number of banks. Sadly, this small showplace now looks exactly like nobody cares because it has joined the ranks of "Nobody's Problem." This is a very false, though catchy name. This is everybody's problem. When the undesirables pass by these homes, it is an open invitation to vandalism at the least. ...more

Since the day I drove it out of the Rick Mathews Buick parking lot, it lets me know if I have failed to fasten my seat belt. If I have a passenger in the other front seat, the car also beeps again to indicate that the other seat belt should also be fastened. ...more

What A Deal In a recent article regarding an annual Hernando County gas purchase contract that took effect on Nov. 24, a newly elected county official, John Druzbick, the county purchasing director, James Gantt, and a county commissioner, Dave Russell, all trumpeted as success locking in one year pricing of $1.80 (gas), and $2.00 (diesel) a gallon pricing for 1 million plus gallons of fuel, as a win for Hernando county taxpayers. ...more

As a past president of the Highlands County Genealogical Society, I am writing to express my heartfelt thanks to you, your staff and your newspaper for your present and past interest in and publicizing of our society and our activities. The most recent article (and corrections) regarding the partnering of the greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce and HCGS certainly brought new awareness of our over 25-year local presence to your many readers. We would be delighted if we could be ready to receive people as quickly as the included opening date cited in the article. Regretfully, the time frame presented is physically impossible. There are no books or furnishings on-site and we do not have a genie or magical wand to re-shelve our over 5,000 books and periodicals. ...more
