Mayor Pam Iorio marked Earth Day by unveiling a new recycling program that will place receptacles for recycling plastic and aluminum downtown and in the Channel District. Iorio said the 20 new bins will give pedestrians a place to throw plastic bottles, tins cans and other recyclables instead of tossing them into a garbage can. The city has teamed up with the Tampa Downtown Partnership on a program that will cost about $15,000 a year. More receptacles are planned in the future. ...more

As progressive as the city of St. Petersburg is, it's mind-boggling that it is the largest municipality in Florida not offering residents and businesses curbside pickup of recyclable materials. Instead, folks have to load up bottles, jugs and other stuff and take them to collection centers, which is a deterrent to widespread recycling. ...more
