A 22-year-old Hudson man was arrested Monday , accused of breaking into a home and stealing copper. Sometime between July 2 and July 17, Kenneth Andrew Adams, of 11517 State Road 52, Lot 93, stole a drill, ladder, two copper bowls, a copper pitcher and several pounds of copper tile roofing from a home on Ivy Lane, according to a Pasco County Sheriff's Office report. ...more

Regarding "Don't Trash Junk Mail; City To Recycle It" (Metro, June 19): I would like to commend the city of Tampa for adding so many more items to the recycling list. This makes recycling so much easier. I am a teacher as well as a homemaker. I have always emphasized both at home and in my classroom, the importance of the "Four R's": reuse, recycle and reduce all in the context of respect for our precious Earth. But recycling has not always been made easy. Now that the city has added many more items to their collection list starting today, it is very easy for the citizens to recycle almost everything that makes up so much of our garbage. ...more

SEBRING — Here are six things you probably don't know about Carl Cool, who is retiring from his post as Highlands County administrator after decades of service. ONE: Late-Night Lonely At about 1 a.m., Christy Reed, the director of Highlands County's recycling program, was in the loneliest, saddest place she could be. She was standing in a deserted hospital hallway and had just received the news from a nurse that her father had passed away. Reed said in the minutes after she learned that her father's long battle with illness had ended with his death, she felt more lonely than she thought a person could feel. "Suddenly," Reed said, "I turned and saw two people there, standing, waiting for me. One was Carl Cool, and the other was Claude Howerton (then a county commissioner)." Reed said both men gave her a hug and helped tremendously in easing the pain of that night. Howerton and Cool had driven to the hospital separately after getting phone calls reporting that Reed's father was close to passing away.
