Conservatism Not Racism I read with amazement "Commentator's Rush To Bitterness," (Views, Feb. 8) in which Frank Harris essentially calls Rush Limbaugh a racist because Limbaugh hopes President Barack Obama fails. ...more

Bush's recent presidency brings up an important question. Why do people having the best of intentions make mistakes? I'm sure Bush doesn't have a mean bone in his body, but he has made serious mistakes in judgment throughout his life. Giving up alcohol was his greatest achievement. But it didn't make him either wise or saintly. We all make mistakes in judgment. I believe this is because our negative fearful and angry reactions are not to be trusted. They make us believe we are doing the right thing, but in reality they are the cause of most of our deep-seated personal problems as well as our relationship problems. They also keep us in the dark as to the truth of our own actions. Killing the messenger has yet to go out of style. ...more

Two unfortunate counterparts to democracy are greed and corruption. Rush Limbaugh has said that the salaries and perks extended corporate executives are none of the people's business. This is one of the few areas where he and I part company. I wonder if the recent near-collapse of our economy has changed his thinking. When business failures result in government bailouts, that cost is passed to taxpayers. Excessive salaries often result in stockholders being cheated. This is in reference to Dick Ford's Jan. 13 letter "Democratic Recession." Like most Republicans he feels Democrats are always to blame for all of the ills of our country. Republicans insist the 2001 economic down turn was in progress and inherited by Bush from the Clinton administration. Even though Obama will inherit the current recession (maybe depression) from Bush, I'm sure you Republicans will find a way to blame it on the Democrats. ...more

Our initial reaction to the "Barack the Magic Negro" controversy was to ignore it. For Chip Saltsman, a candidate to chair the Republican National Committee, to send out a Christmas CD to other party officials that included the offensive, un-funny parody was such an evidently boneheaded move that it didn't seem to require our comment. RNC Chairman Mike Duncan, who is seeking reelection, said he was "shocked and appalled that anyone would think this is appropriate." ...more

Mr. Watson's recent letter just typifies the liberal mindset with which we are so grievously afflicted. I suppose it is perfectly appropriate to vilify and demonize our president for the past eight years and to trash and ridicule the decent and honorable American citizen, Sarah Palin, but God forbid that we should say anything negative about the Democratic "Messiah." ...more
