AVON PARK — Verbal barbs were hurled around the chamber during Monday's council meeting after negotiations stalled on plans to rezone a former nursery located near the Avon Park Executive Airport. It culminated into Airport Community Development Agency Advisory Board member Jim Renfro leaving the meeting after he was interrupted by attorney Warwick "Bud" Furr, who represents Roland Dilley. Dilley has been trying unsuccessfully to develop a plot of land that lies inside the airport's runway protection zone. ...more

AVON PARK — Former Daytona Beach Police Capt. Matthew Doughney's new beat as Avon Park's top police officer begins today after he is sworn in as the new police chief. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. inside Avon Park's City Council Chambers. City Manager Sarah Adelt said that Doughney will earn $68,000 a year to take over the department. There has been another small setback in the city's plans to revitalize its downtown core. In an agreement reached Dec. 18 in which the city council voted to sell 17.98 acres southeast of Bullard Parkway and 56th Street to Ram Development Co./Pinnacle Realty Advisors for $14.4 million, the master developer consented to presenting its preliminary site plan of pedestrian-friendly retail, residential, restaurant and office components for approval at Tuesday's council meeting. ...more
