Whenever I read or hear scare tactics used in the press or letters to the editor, I can easily identify the contributor to the Republican Party. I'm observing their reluctance, or inability to get over their hold on the reins of government leadership. More recently I have noticed they have used their cumulative wealth (or what's left of it) to even encourage public speaking for their Tea Party members. This Tea Party movement was encouraged by Fox TV for their own "entertainment." Yes folks, it is not a coincidence that Fox TV is called "entertainment" instead of a news station. During Busch's presidency, no similar mass effort was made by the Democratic Party out of respect of the presidential office. U.S. citizens should be more conservative of voicing their political opinions. They should make problems and concerns known to Congressional and Senate leaders through the proper channels such as e-mail, phone and mail addresses. This way voices are heard to the U.S. Government and not around the world. ...more

When I was working long, hard hours in my career, the doctor told me my medical woes were due to stress. Then when I retired and gained quite a bit of weight -- understatement of the year -- my aches and pains were due to being overweight, according to the Doc. Now the doctors are starting to use the "O" word, OLD, as the cause of my maladies. ...more

I am writing in answer to the publication by Wes Leigh on Oct. 17. Mr. Leigh didn't want to talk about gay marriage; instead he used a smokescreen, attempting to scare senior citizens into thinking that their benefits will be taken away if Amendment Two is passed, which is not true. The small bundle of rights the Domestic Partners Registries have will all be available by signing a Durable Power of Attorney. ...more

Save Taxes; Vote 'No' I'm just one of the individuals here in Spring Hill who thinks we can save taxes by having one county fire department. It just makes good tax sense. I don't have the money to buy this election like the firefighters' union is trying to do or using scare tactics. ...more

Demand Is Worldwide U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor's article "Declaring Independence From Big Oil" (Other Views, July 4) is typical of politicians who like to pose as economists when in fact they are not. She is a typical lawyer who takes license to pose as an expert on energy and oil. Her article looks like party boiler plate. As the chief economist for the Foundation for Fiscal Reform, Inc. in Palm Harbor, I warn our readers nationwide each week of the dangers of politicians. ...more

Fresh Faces Needed I wish the people at the county would make a recording on tape. About this time every year, they start crying about the budget and using scare tactics. The best one is when it comes to education and schools. If Hernando County School Superintendent Wayne Alexander was so worried about the budget, how come he got a hefty raise? He said he did a good job. That's what he was paid for in the first place. They all cry about the budget, but no one wants to give up their fat paycheck to help the situation. ...more
