SEBRING — Four of five members of the School Board of Highlands County oppose the proposed change in the state's science standards that would present evolution as fact to students. Some school board members across the state have opposed the proposed revisions to the science curriculum that specifies that evolution be taught as "fact" as opposed to a "theory," School Board Attorney John McClure said at a recent school board meeting. SEBRING — The School Board of Highlands County will vote on Tuesday to begin developing a policy for anabolic steroid testing of student athletes. The state has directed the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) to test student-athletes in grades nine through 12 for the use of anabolic steroids during the 2007-08 school year. "I haven't seen any problems here. I do know of other schools that have had some problems," said Sebring High School Athletic Director Terry Quarles. "I think it's a good start with Florida High School [Athletic Association] to test them." AVON PARK — The Highlands County School Board will not have to pay for a reclaimed "gray water" pipe hook-up at Memorial Elementary School until the city's reclaimed water lines reach within 500 feet of the school.
