AVON PARK — A suspect in the 2001 stabbing murder of a Lake Placid man remained in Highlands County Jail without bond Monday after he was extradited from Madison County. Juan Tirso Perez, now 26, also known as Juan Tirso Marin and Juan Tirso Marin-Perez, was booked in at 9 p.m. Friday on a charge of second-degree murder as a suspect in the stabbing death of Sergio Jose Morales, according to sheriff's central records. According to the arrest narrative, it was about 12:30 a.m. Feb. 19, 2001, when Morales was stabbed to death in his trailer home at 303 Highlands Blvd., in Lake Placid. ...more

TAMPA -- A 29-year-old man pleaded guilty to two federal charges of murder in racketeering, relating to the 1998 death of two homeless men, U.S. Attorney's Office officials announced today. Charles Marovskis, formerly of Tampa, is the second man who has pleaded guilty in the case. Kenneth Hoover, 35, pleaded guilty to the same charges on March 7, 2007. ...more

SEBRING — A Sebring man remained in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail Friday, charged in connection with a reported armed burglary, armed assault and kidnapping of a Sebring woman. Chad Anthony Martin, 27, of 7414 County Road 17 S., Sebring, was booked in Wednesday on charges of burglary of a dwelling, structure or conveyance while armed, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and kidnapping to commit or facilitate a felony. On Nov. 8, sheriff's investigators met with a Sebring woman who reported that at about 11 p.m. Nov. 7, in the 3000 block of Sparkling Drive, in Sebring, she heard a noise of her kitchen door opening. She looked out her bedroom door and spotted two people standing in her living room, the report stated. She locked the bedroom door and tried to get out through her laundry room door, which connected to her bedroom.
