TAMPA - In November, Dan Lombard and Ernest Garcia Sr. were fans at a Jesuit High School football game. They didn't know each other and had no idea their lives were about to intersect in a powerful way. As Lombard, a driver engineer for the Tampa Fire Department, left the game, he saw a car run through a stop sign. Lombard, off duty, followed the car as it pulled off to the side of the road. Lately, I've been up close and personal with an inordinate number of Florida wildlife. Some of those encounters have been pleasant, some not. And that got me to thinking about why we react as we do to "all creatures great and small," including people. I've spent many mornings admiring the beautiful sandhill cranes, storks, and ibis that are tame as pets around here. State university health directors are urging a change in state law to require that all new students be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis. The directors met in Tallahassee today to talk about how best to protect students against the infection, which killed a University of South Florida sophomore on Monday. Current law allows students to opt out of the vaccine and health directors say that's a problem. They want the state's university oversight board to seek a change in the law that allows only few exemptions, such as medical or religious. ...more
