SEBRING — The Albertson's at 3610 U.S. 27 N., in Sebring, is being sold to Publix Supermarkets, along with 48 other Florida Albertson's stores. Maria Brous, Publix spokeswoman, said Monday that it was "too early to tell" if the Sebring Albertson's would remain open as a Publix store. About 100 Albertson's employees will need to attend dedicated job fairs to become Publix employees if the grocery chain continues to keep the Sebring store open. Highlands County has three Publix stores. "It's not uncommon for us to have locations together," said Brous. "It creates more competition between (Publix) stores to gain that loyal customer." ...more

AVON PARK –– More than 788 BMX bicycle racers along with approximately 1,500 family and friends gathered at the Highlands County YMCA BMX track in Avon Park over the weekend for state qualifiers. The two-day competition attracted the biggest field of racers so far in the 2008 State Series Qualifiers. Riders from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, Bogota, Columbia, and Brazil came to challenge what is becoming one of the most talked about tracks in the country. It was stated that a rider from Michigan e-mailed home to tell his friends that Highlands County YMCA BMX has the potential to be ranked with national favorites. Among the 788 riders competing were 17 professional riders, three riders over the age of 50, and four riders under the age of eight. ...more

SEBRING — It wasn't a load of peaches a Georgia man was stopped transporting Wednesday afternoon through Highlands County. The man remained in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $2,000 bail Thursday, after he was stopped while transporting enough marijuana to make 900 marijuana cigarettes, according to the sheriff's office. Shane Carlton, 21, of Cornelia, Ga., was booked on charges of possession of narcotics equipment to manufacture or deliver and distribution of marijuana. According to the arrest report, the car Carlton was driving was seen speeding doing 72 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone by K-9 Deputy Tom Fort. ...more
