Although Stuart is only a juvenile sea turtle, he's had a rough life. He was found on the east coast of Florida with serious shell and skull injuries and a grim prognosis for survival. On Friday, he was brought to The Florida Aquarium in Tampa, which hopes to treat Stuart, give the turtle time to heal and release him back into the wild. If all goes well, Stuart eventually will reach 31/2 to 4 feet in length and help contribute to the survival of the species. We can sympathize with the people who have been struggling for years to pump life into New Port Richey's downtown. Exhibit A in their tale of woe is Main Street Landing, the mixed-use project that during the Florida property boom of the early part of this decade appeared to be the kick start downtown had needed. Given the current economic situation, however, trying to get the project back in gear right now might not be a good idea. ...more

Nearly five years ago, as ground was being broken on the Main Street Landing construction site, city officials at the time looked forward to March 2009. That's when, if all went as planned, the Community Redevelopment Agency would have happily presented a $1.25 million check to Gainesville-based developer Ken McGurn if the Mediterranean-styled commercial-residential development was significantly built out and half the units leased or sold. March 2009 has arrived, and McGurn met March 10 with City Council, which was acting in its role as CRA board. Instead of a grip-and-grin check presentation, the two sides were meeting to figure out what they might do to restore a now-strained business relationship and get the project moving again. ...more
