Bingo. If you do not want to work the games, there are other areas in which you can use your time. For more information, call a board member or Chuck Premorel at 352-397-3351. The other area needing volunteers is the Crime Watch program. According to those in law enforcement, the rise of crime in this area is alarming. Surrounding areas on three sides have Crime Watch, so that leaves the criminals who are brave enough to come here with their gangs, etc. No, you do not have to apprehend these troublemakers; the law is there for that. It makes it difficult for these criminals to do their work when they are being watched by everyone in our town, so stay tuned for more details about the next meeting or call Mona Premorel at 352-397-3351. ...more

SEBRING — The Salvation Army looked a lot like a big family gathering on Thanksgiving, with people hugging one another as they walked through the door and many cooks in the kitchen. Capt. Mary Holmes said the Salvation Army feeds about 75 mouths every Thanksgiving, and most of those people volunteer during the meal as well. "We usually have as many volunteers as we have diners," Holmes said. "A lot of people don't want to come just for the meal, so they help out as well, and we love having them. To me, people need the fellowship just as much as they need a hot meal." The diners enjoyed turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberries, rolls and big slices of pie. The turkey was donated by Kiwanis Club, and Village Inn had a pie drive and donated 40 pies. ...more

BARBECUE ALEX'S SOUTHERN STYLE BAR-B-Q, 5362 W. Village Drive, Tampa; (813) 269-0050. Available from the pit are ribs, pork, beef, chicken and sausage, which Alex's serves alone, in combinations, by the pound and in family portions. Alex's Big Boy Platter, a sampler plate with more than enough meat for two, had at least a half-pound of tender, moist, shredded pork, along with chicken, ribs and sausage. The sausage was the tastiest of the meats and came in crumbly chunks coated with a sweet sauce. The mound of pork was flavorful, especially mixed with Alex's own barbecue sauce, which offers a good balance of tart and sweet. The sauce comes on everything, so tell 'em if you want it on the side.
