Along with dusty family heirlooms, mattresses and furniture, self-storage units are serving as homes for a growing number of homeless people. It's not a widespread practice, but there are more people renting space and sneaking in at some storage units around Hillsborough County. There's no plumbing, and it's strictly against a myriad of rules, but people without homes are finding the rent cheap and accommodations safer than on the streets. ...more

Here's a sobering thought that nobody seems to be raising: If we had followed the plan to privatize Social Security by investing in Wall Street securities, then this week's meltdown of our financial system would be eating up the retirement plans of millions of seniors. And the government bailout of major financials - at a discount - would have cost all Americans even more than it's costing us now. ...more

In regard to Sarah Palin and all the attention focused on her, I have to wonder, when did we start treating politicians like celebrities? More and more it seems we act as if these people are somehow better than the common person. And the last thing these egotistical people need is celebrity status. Sarah Palin is a virtual unknown. She has very little experience in politics, and has yet to speak honestly about her beliefs. In the ads and interviews so far, she has simply followed a script. This letter is in reference to the article "When a Promise Isn't Kept." I was having my morning cup of coffee and I picked up the Highlands Today, dated Aug. 22, and saw the Three Stooges; oh I'm sorry, the Four Stooges, complaining like my mom used to say, "Complaining about how hard they have it with a loaf of bread under each arm." Ford, G.M. and Chrysler are in the shape they are today because of men like these four, wanting more and more! No wonder we are called ugly Americans! The days of working at the same job for 20 years are mostly over and the younger guys coming up don't get benefits like these guys anymore. ...more
