The Highlands County Legislative Delegation Meeting didn't sound like the sort of event where emotions would overflow, but pleas not to cut state funding came from people with drug addictions and mental illnesses, representatives of pregnant mothers and infant children, schools and South Florida Community College. ...more

I am not given to writing letters to the editor but have felt compelled with a sense of urgency to respond to the accusations put forward recently by one of our Spring Lakes residents. Having served a little over nine years on the SLID board, my background is quite deep and I can without hesitation say that the current commissioners are not and do not intend to do anything that would be out of line financially or authoritatively on their watch. This is for the most part a thankless job and not a member of the board over the years as far as I know has ever undertook the job of soliciting votes to serve the Spring Lake Community for financial gain. If anything, there are times when I know a board member has requested themselves from voting on an issue that might have questionable ramifications. ...more

It's been said, sometimes whimsically, that "no good deed goes unpunished" and that has certainly proven true for the Spring Lake Improvement District Board. It is with great good fortune that the residents of Spring Lake are blessed with a board and district manager that does not spend time looking in the rear view mirror but instead is planning for the future of this fine community with its best interest at the forefront. ...more

Just when we thought we were safe from any possible controversy over decisions or proposed actions by the Spring Lake Improvement District (SLID) Board of Supervisors and their district manager, they come up with yet another grim threat to our existence (or wallets). Their latest action is an extremely serious attempt at significantly expanding their powers through a complete re-write and re-codification of the existing SLID charter. This must be approved in a bill passed in both Houses of the Florida Legislature and signed by the governor. The bad news is that SLID intends to formally present this draft new charter to the legislative delegation (Rep. Denise Grimsley, et. al.) for their review and further action on Dec. 3 at the Highlands County Government Center. ...more

The Spring Lake Board of Supervisors is requesting legislation to modify its current codification for the purpose of updating and streamlining the district's governing document. The present codification document, enacted in 2005, is for the most part unchanged from the original codification of 30 years ago. The proposed legislation (codification document) addresses shortcomings in the present codification and will allow the district to better fulfill the current and future needs of the community. It updates the provisions of the district's charter to recognize popularly elected seats to the district board. ...more

The Spring Lake Improvement District Board of Supervisors are again violating their oaths of office and are not doing the will of the people. They are now asking the state Legislature for broad new powers that through assessment powers would drive many senior homeowners into foreclosure. These are trying times for many seniors who are on fixed incomes. We are nationwide in the greatest financial crunch that America has ever seen. ...more
