In its recent anniversary issue, the New Yorker magazine took a look at the state of affairs here in Florida. Apparently there is nothing amiss in the Empire State worthy of note. So it declares things here a real mess, thanks to the collapse of the real estate market. While it told of some foreclosure hardship tales from southwestern Florida, the ground zero of the devastation, according to the New Yorker, is good old Pasco County. ...more

The other night I tried to read part of Thomas Pynchon's "Gravity's Rainbow" (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition, $18) while I was very sleepy, which meant that the story, which is hard enough to follow when you're fully awake and completely engaged, took on a dreamy quality that I sort of enjoyed. After all, it sometimes reads as if Pynchon wrote the thing in a similar state. ...more
