Hijacked At The Pump If big oil can't make it on crude oil, they make it on refining. The last time oil hit a low of $34 a barrel we paid $1.59 a gallon for regular. Now we're hijacked at the pump at $1.93. Part of the stimulus package should be an excess profit tax on big oil to finance infrastructure. ...more

The e-mail all week and the comments on the blog have continued to focus on the recent column on the young woman lying in a hospital bed, the victim of a horrific beating and rape outside the Bloomingdale Regional Public Library. Regarding "Details Emerge On Library Attack, Victim" (front page, June 7): I read with sadness the front-page article about the suspect in the Bloomingdale Library rape case. I also read the heartbreaking Steve Otto column about the innocent victim. She had the world by the tail until a monster came along and brutally snatched it all away in a few horrifying moments. As a mother and a grandmother of six girls I can only imagine the pain of this family. Our quiet, friendly community will never be the same. ...more
