SEBRING — A new Catholic school is scheduled to open in August in Sebring. St. Catherine Catholic School, which will be based at the St. Catherine Catholic Church, will have classes for pre-kindergarten 3-year-olds through second grade, said Rosemary Bratton, the Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Venice in Florida. This would be the first Catholic school to open in the Florida Heartland. Currently, the closest Catholic schools to Highlands County are in Winter Haven, Lakeland and Port Charolette. The Diocese of Venice decided on opening the school after considering the growing population of Highlands County and the growing number of Catholic families here. SEBRING — The public can learn more about the pros and cons of an elected versus appointed superintendent of schools today at a 6 p.m. workshop in the Highlands County Commission Chambers. The public's opinion on the issue will also be heard by the School Board. County Supervisor of Elections Joe Campbell has been invited to speak on the election process in changing to an appointed superintendent. If Campbell is attending to matters with the recent election, School Board Attorney John McClure will cover the process in making the change. ...more

SEBRING — The school board workshop scheduled for Tuesday to discuss the issue of an appointed versus an elected superintendent of schools has been canceled. Florida School Boards Association Executive Director Wayne Blanton, who was to provide the background on the issue, had a scheduling conflict prompting the cancellation. A new workshop date has yet to be determined. A citizen request initiated the school board's interest in reviewing the pros and cons of the two methods of filling the top position in the school district.
