Characters ranging from a bite-size bumblebee to a bruising Tampa Bay Buccaneer strutted their stuff Friday night at Howl'oween, a costume contest for dogs at Northdale Recreation Center. Other dog costumes included a princess, pumpkin, chocolate chip cookie, construction worker, caterpillar and skeleton. There also was a haunted trail for children and an adoption fair for dogs. Similar events are set for Nov. 1 at West Park Dog Park, 6402 Occident St. in Tampa, and Mango Dog Park, 11717 Clay Pit Road in Seffner. Brooke Burke briefly joined this season's ranks of dancing wounded, but it didn't keep her from jitterbugging and nabbing the top score on "Dancing With the Stars" for the seventh straight week. The actress-model injured her right foot during practice Sunday and made a precautionary hospital trip, according to ABC. X-rays showed she suffered a contusion. The next day, Burke and dance partner Derek Hough performed "Don't Be Cruel" and netted a 29 out of 30 possible points from the show's judges. It was the highest score this season. ...more

Brooks, Mehra Hailed For Work Benefiting Children About 300 guests attended the seventh annual Champion for Children awards ceremony and dinner Oct. 2 at the Renaissance Hotel at International Plaza in Tampa. The dinner, the signature event for Voices for Children of Hillsborough County Inc., the fundraising branch of Guardian Ad Litem, honored Tampa Bay Buccaneer Derrick Brooks as the 2008 Champion for Children for his work with youths, including The Brooks Bunch, Derrick Brooks Charities and Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School in North Tampa. Tampa psychiatrist Rahul Mehra was presented with the Guardian Angel Award for volunteering for Guardian Ad Litem, the nonprofit agency that assigns volunteers to represent children who need help during legal proceedings. The evening, called "Old Havana Nights," raised more than $43,000 and featured an outdoor cocktail reception with cigar bar, a chance drawing for a collection of 60 bottles of wine donated by board members, a silent auction, dinner and dancing.
