Regarding "Bedlam plagues clunker program" (Aug. 2): In America, it seems, we have a tendency to buy new and dispose of old items even if they are still usable. An idea: Do not destroy the vehicles. I am sure that at least 25 percent to 50 percent are drivable. Maybe the miles per gallon might not be the best, but donate them to the Salvation Army, Goodwill, VFW or the Kidney Foundation. Maybe even our military and their families could use a vehicle. ...more

PLAYER OF THE GAME Philip Rivers is in rare company. But not just because he leads all NFL quarterbacks in passer rating. Rivers, who completed 21 of 31 throws for 287 yards and a career-best four touchdowns Sunday, is one of only two quarterbacks to leave a game against the Bucs at Raymond James Stadium this year with a better passer rating than he had going in. Rivers came into the game with a 101.4 mark. In beating the Bucs he posted a mark of 136.7 and he did so rather effortlessly. Aided by a rushing attack that kept the Bucs off-balance and perhaps by a defense that played a little soft in coverage, Rivers moved the ball around to a variety of receivers and quickly drove the Chargers downfield in drive after drive. Scouts will tell you Rivers has a tendency to run hot and cold and that he sometimes tightens up in big games. Maybe they're right. But Rivers was as hot as could be and there was nothing tight about him. ...more

Saints WR Lance Moore vs. Bucs CB Ronde Barber Moore is having a great season, but scouts aren't all that impressed with his skill set. He is not real big or real fast, and he has a tendency to wait on the ball instead of going after it. He is just the kind of player that Barber can take advantage of and make a big play against, because Barber tends to wait for the right moment to jump a route. The Saints threw to Barber's side of the field a lot, and with some success, in the first meeting. They'll probably look to do the same again today. If they do that with Moore as the target, look for a big play from Barber. ...more
