A big ... no, wait ... a HUGE trend this winter is the minimalist look. When I first saw all the unadorned straight lines and conservative opaque colors coming down the runway, I couldn't help but think of a resurgence of Andy Warhol- and Edie Sedgwick-ish style. If they gave medals for anthem singing, U.S. athletes wouldn't get any. The Chinese would dominate because they all seem to know their national song cold. They sing the words with full-throated abandon, like so many robots with fresh batteries. ...more

The squall line that blew through Central Florida on Monday couldn't have had lousier timing. Not only did it declare, in soaking fashion, a startling end to a week's worth of chamber of commerce weather, it did so in lock step with the high school bands marching down Seventh Street to proclaim the start of the 61st Pasco County Fair, reducing their traditional trumpeting to so much brass-plated gargling. ...more
