AVON PARK — Heather Barnes is accustomed to wearing many hats. After all, the Avon Park senior is a star softball player, an outstanding diver and a top-notch student. Next year, however, Barnes will don a new hat altogether after signing a full scholarship on Thursday to play softball with the Stetson University Hatters. "It's an exciting time right now," Barnes said. "I got the paperwork last night and now its official. Now I can just concentrate on softball and beating Sebring. AVON PARK –– When you go winless the previous season, there is no place to go but up. The Avon Park Red Devils boys soccer team are hard at work to try and put the past behind them, as they welcome their fourth head coach in four years –– Jocelyn Simplice. Simplice, who hails from the island of Haiti, was the AP girls soccer assistant coach last season and takes over a Red Devil squad that scored just five goals all of last season. "I know these kids have gone through many coaches," the first-year head coach said. "I've assured them that I plan on staying quite a while." ...more

AVON PARK — When members of the public got their first look at the inside of South Florida Community College's new Health and Science Education Center, they were impressed, but it's the students and professors who use the building daily who say they appreciate it most. SFCC President Norman Stephens said the project encompasses the work of thousands of people who have worked on the building in the five years since they started planning for it. "This is quite a milestone for the college," Stephens said at the open house Wednesday. "One of the reasons we are so proud is because it was such a participative effort." ...more
