Drivers have been doing double-takes along a 12.5-mile stretch of U.S. 92, wondering whether they've witnessed the Sunshine State's version of Alaska's "bridge to nowhere." The boardwalks are part of a multimillion-dollar Florida Department of Transportation project alongside U.S. 92 between Eureka Springs and Thonotosassa roads. 8:33 a.m. Polk County emergency managers are preparing to get back to business as usual. Because Fay appears to be heading to the east of Polk, officials expect no more than a stormy summer day. Red Cross shelters that were scheduled to open at 10 a.m. are no longer necessary and will not open. The special needs transportation has been canceled.
