After more than three years of organizing, petition-signing and meeting with local politicians, Sun City Center residents were successful today in getting approval for a golf cart path that will help them get across U.S. 301 to Walmart. The buildings are gone, but there's still work to do at former truck weigh stations on Interstate 4 west of Thonotosassa Road. The remaining work includes removing old scales, laying sod on the site and placing a new sign for the Thonotosassa Road exit, said John McShaffrey, spokesman for the Florida Department of Transportation project. Businesses on Causeway Boulevard are struggling. Customer traffic has plunged at Florida Discount Transmissions and half the usual number of tables are occupied at the Seafood Palace. Small businesses on that three-mile stretch between U.S. 41 and U.S. 301 say the $42.6 million widening of the causeway, now entering its 10th month, is hurting business. Drivers have been doing double-takes along a 12.5-mile stretch of U.S. 92, wondering whether they've witnessed the Sunshine State's version of Alaska's "bridge to nowhere."
