When I first heard about the idea of a baseball league forming for individuals with disabilities, I felt compelled to find out more about it. I have two brothers-in-law who could benefit greatly from this league. I purely went to see about the who, what, where and whens. After that first meeting, I decided to volunteer to coach. This was my way of helping out. A few weeks later, I was part of the board of directors. AVON PARK — Club Toluca and Cruz Azul are well-known soccer teams in Mexico, and they have been formidable teams on Memorial Field as well. The players, many of them immigrants and migrants, converge every Sunday through the winter and the spring to play soccer in the Aztec League, which just began its sixth season. And they don't take their pastime lightly, either. The games have a referee and two assistants flagging each sideline. One can hear an occasional angry scream from the coaches on the sidelines when a call goes against their team, when they're not trying to rally their players during the game. Teams take players living in Wauchula, Lake Placid, Frostproof and beyond the Heartland, with visiting teams occasionally coming from Arcadia and Bradenton. The uniforms even match up with the colors of their namesake teams in Mexico, at least for those based on them. ...more

LAKE PLACID — Tiles by Fran Inc. has been in business in Lake Placid more than 20 years, but the company's Paula Tharpe believes few people in the community know about the decorative tile operation. But that should change because of a new address. Tiles by Fran Inc. has moved from Placid Lakes to 208 N. Main Ave. in downtown Lake Placid. "I knew we had to move into town to get traffic and let people know we are in business," Tharpe said. Fran and Paul Hadden, Paula's parents, started the business in the mid-1980s.
