Sebring native Thomas B. McGuire Jr., one of the most decorated American war heroes of all time, won the Congressional Medal of Honor in a dog-fight air battle over an island in the Philippines. SEBRING — Highlands County's most decorated war hero received another post-mortem honor this week. On the Island of Negros in the Philippines, a large memorial marker was set on the crash site where the late Maj. Thomas B. McGuire Jr. died in battle. McGuire, a Highlands County native who won the Congressional Medal of Honor as a pilot in the Army Air Corps in World War II, died at that spot 63 years ago while on a mission that turned into a desperate dog fight. ...more

I'm commenting on the Highlands Today editorial about giving our veterans a stipend of $75 per month, which is fine, but not nearly enough. We have sent our finest over to battle for our freedoms in so many wars. We train them to kill, and whatever it takes to win. Then home they come, mixed-up, confused, depressed, no job, half the time they have lost their families, and we're gonna' give them $75 a month? ...more
