Getting there

Edelweiss Airlines flies nonstop direct from Tampa International to Zurich on Tuesdays and Fridays, departing at 7 p.m. and arriving around 10 am. Book through partner airline Swiss Air at swiss.com. The cost is around $1,500 for coach; Tuesdays cost slightly less.

The Swiss Pass gives you unlimited free travel throughout the Swiss Travel System and free admission to most museums. A one-week ticket runs around $650 for first class and $400 for second class. Purchase through myswitzerland.com.

Where to stay

Fribourg: We stayed at the clean and comfortable Au Parc Hotel, just a few bus stops from the main train station. Single rooms start at $160/doubles $215. Go to auparc-hotel.ch.

Interlaken: The Hotel du Nord is centrally located between the city's two train stations and along the main street. Single rooms start at $170/doubles $200. Go to swissdreamshotels.com.

Lucerne: Splurge with a room at the Art Deco Hotel Montana. Spectacular views and the famous Louis Bar are worth room rates that start at $200 single/$300 double. Go to hotel-montana.ch.
