Treasure Island: A Real Gem

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A pirate welcomes visitors to Treasure Island, a small community north of St. Pete Beach.

But don't fret, he's friendly. After all, this is a family-oriented beach.

And that small-town homey feeling is what attracts the young and old.

The wide sidewalks along the beach make it ideal for in-line skaters.

Outside beach hotels, an elderly foursome plays shuffleboard next to teenagers spiking beach volleyballs.

The island is lined with hotels, small cottages and strip malls. Ice cream shops and beach stores dot the landscape.

The beach is wide, making it easy to find private spots in the sand, even when there are crowds.

This beach town is quiet, but not sleepy. Special events are a held almost once a month here, including music festivals, beach volleyball tournaments and more. In December an illuminated boat parade makes its way down the intercoastal waterway where hundreds watch from docks and boats.

Check out the schedule at the Treasure Island Community Center, which offers aerobics and line dancing classes. A bingo caller belts out lucky numbers on some nights.

The island is pedestrian friendly. Walk along the wide sidewalks on Gulf Boulevard and stop into the many beach shops.

John's Pass Village and Boardwalk, which includes restaurants and gift shops, is a short walk across the bridge into Madeira Beach.
