Tonight's Freeze Might Be Worse

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Another slug of arctic air is on the way that could send freezing weather stabbing as far south as the Everglades tonight and bring even lower temperatures than January's statewide freeze.

The National Weather Service has posted freeze watches for tonight across the peninsula to the southern tip of the state.Only Pinellas County and a strip along the Atlantic coast in South Florida may escape the latest cold.

The state is determining the extent of crop damage from January. Officials will wait for the latest body punch before deciding whether crop damage warrants a request for a federal disaster declaration.

Strawberry farmers in Hillsborough County generally escaped serious damage in January but might not be that lucky tonight.

Temperatures around the strawberry growing areas could drop below freezing by 1 a.m. and stay there until after 8 a.m. after bottoming out at 23.
