One more night of freezing temperatures is ahead for West Central Florida, though forecasters don't expect the frigid air to extend as deep into the state as this morning.
The National Weather Service has freeze warnings tonight for the west coast and Central Florida as far south as Punta Gorda, except for Pinellas County.
A hard freeze warning is in place from Pasco County north, where temperatures are expected to fall into the low 20s in east Pasco and lower 30s near the coast. In Hernando County, the weather service says temperatures could be in the low 20s or possibly the teens.
But once the chill passes, warmer weather will start seeping back into the region. After a high today that might make the lower 50s, temperatures Friday should be in the 60s and by Saturday reach the low 70s.
Temperatures in the vegetable growing regions around Lake Okeechobee dropped to below freezing, but Belle Glade, where crops were pummeled during a January freeze, dropped below 32 for only a brief time this morning.
Temperatures were lower around Immokalee, another vegetable region, dropping below freezing for about four hours with a low temperature of 27.
Most vegetables freeze at 28 degrees, but squash, tomato, eggplant and snap beans can freeze at 30 degrees.
Around Florida, the freeze extended well south along the East Coast, reaching Vero Beach, with 32 degrees.
Tampa International Airport avoided a freeze by 1 degree, but temperature hit freezing at MacDill Air Force Base and dropped into the 20s in Polk County.
Among the weather service stations, Tallahassee won the Popsicle award for coldest in Florida with 14 degrees. Crestview and Cross City tied for second with 17 degrees
